Classic Red velvet cupcake recipe

These red velvet cupcakes are soft, moist, and perfectly balanced with a hint of cocoa and tangy buttermilk. Topped with luscious frosting, they’re a classic treat perfect for any occasion

Ingredients

  • 1 ¼ cups )160g )all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder unsweetened
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup (120ml ) buttermilk
  • ½ cup (120ml) vegetable oil
  • ¾ cup (150g ) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1-2 tsp red food coloring adjust as needed

Instructions

  • Preheat & Prep – Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake tin with liners.
  • Dry Ingredients – Sift flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt together.

  • Wet Ingredients – In another bowl, whisk sugar, oil, egg, vanilla, and vinegar.
    ½ cup (120ml) vegetable oil, ¾ cup (150g ) granulated sugar, 1 large egg, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 1 tsp white vinegar
  • Combine & Color – Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk to the wet mix. Stir in the food coloring until you get the perfect shade of red.
    ½ cup (120ml ) buttermilk, 1-2 tsp red food coloring
  • Bake – Fill liners ⅔ full and bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Cool & Frost – Let them cool completely before adding your favorite frosting!

Notes

Use room temperature ingredients for a smooth batter and even baking.
Don’t overmix – mix until just combined to keep cupcakes light and fluffy.
For natural red coloring, try beet juice or natural food coloring.
Measure your flour correctly – too much can make cupcakes dense.
Check oven temperature – an overheated oven can dry out the cupcakes.
Frost only when completely cool – warm cupcakes will melt the frosting.
